Scholars of Alcala offers a complete training program for Alfred Hutton‘s seminal book on the sabre, Cold Steel. Hutton was an early HEMA enthusiast, combining the 19th century sport and military fencing of his time with historic manuals from the 16th and 18th centuries.
Courses
Prior experience is strongly recommended. This is a research class and participants will be expected to contribute towards the interpretation of the material. If you have never fenced before, we encourage you to choose one of our other classes.
Hutton’s text assumes that you have familiarity with the French foil, but that’s mostly an issue of terminology.

Study Guides and Books
All fencers will be provided with a copy of Hutton’s Cold Steel manual. It is written in late 19th century English, making it one of the most accessible sources offered by our school.
